Case Study: HE Barnes at CAPA College
MEP Hire Solves A Weighty Issue for HE Barnes…
Facilitating a solution for safely working at heights within strict weight constraints on the CAPA College site in Wakefield.
Sheffield based mechanical and electrical contractor HE Barnes provide an end-to-end service across the UK, covering; pre-construction estimates and tenders, design, installation and testing, as well as reactive and preventative maintenance.
As a contractor on the CAPA College site in Wakefield, HE Barnes supported this £9 million project to reach its completion. The college houses a 150-seat theatre, 10 recording studios, dance studios, drama workshops, a multimedia tech suite and an outdoor amphitheatre.
HE Barnes needed to complete work to the upper floors of the new college. However, restrictions on the weight applied to the floors were becoming a barrier in terms of using traditional access machines to carry out work safely.
Working with MEP Hire, HE Barnes gave the JLG 1530L Micro Scissor Lift a trial on-site, and this incredible access machine not only delivered on their weight restriction challenge but also paid them many other dividends they were not expecting.
Weighing in at just 880kg, the 1530L increases applications indoors where weight is an issue. It is compact enough to fit through standard doorways, yet able to reach heights of up to 6.5 metres. The lift also offers handling advice and guidance direct from the machine, for super-quick confidence in operation as well as improved compliance with health and safety objectives.
With a Direct Electric Drive System, HE Barnes found that the 1530L offered an improved drive performance over machines with a hydraulic drive.
They were also impressed with the machine's battery life, which, at 50% more duty cycles from a single charge, surpassed what they had experienced with alternative machines they had used in the past.
The 1530L really proved its worth at CAPA College and HE Barnes went on to hire a further machines for the site with the support of MEP Hire.
“A standard scissor lift would have been too weighty for the application,” commented Jamie Warrington, Sales Director at MEP Hire. “The Micro Scissor Lift is the lightest in its category, so it quickly became the most obvious solution for the clients’ needs.”
Neil Bedford, Project Manager at HE Barnes added, “Not only did MEP Hire provide an access solution to meet our weight restriction issues, but they also helped us to improve our productivity rates.”
