Case Study: MEP at 30 - Gerry Spence
Colleague Story
Gerry Spence, Workshop Support Supervisor
Gerry Spence is MEP Hire’s Workshop Support Supervisor up at our Glasgow branch. He has worked for MEP Hire for 23 years, joining the company all the way back in October 2002.
As a Workshop Support Supervisor, Gerry oversees all of the maintenance and repairs our hire equipment needs to go through to stay in top shape for our customers!
Gerry leads a team of four technicians, all based in the Glasgow branch, servicing equipment that supports the site needs of MEP Hire customers across Scotland.
As well as ensuring equipment is well-maintained and ready for deployment, Gerry has also trained many MEP Hire Workshop Technicians in his time, further supporting the continued expansion of the business.
Growth has been a predominant trend during Gerry’s time with MEP Hire. Having witnessed the company grow to its now national network of 13 branches across the UK, Gerry has seen the hire fleet grow rapidly and hugely diversify in that time.
Predominantly focusing on press-fitting tools in its early days, MEP Hire expanded its offering to incorporate Low Level Access back in 2013. Gerry’s skills have grown over that time, accommodating and adapting to learning how to maintain and care for the new products that shape MEP Hire’s fleet today.
What Gerry told us he likes most about working for MEP Hire is the fact that many people he worked with early-on are still with the company, giving it a real family feel. Gerry took this one step further and helped his son Gerard Spence to begin a career with MEP Hire. Originally taken-on as an apprentice, Gerard now works as a Service Support Engineer, based across the Scottish region.
In times where Gerry has needed support, he told us that he has also found this from the company. Gerry has had two strokes in recent years and was supported gradually back into his role on both occasions, allowing him to take the time he needed to recover and build-up slowly back into his full-time role.
“When I started with MEP Hire there was around 10 staff in total operating just out of Scotland. We now have nearly 300 staff nationwide, yet it’s great to see so many of the faces still here from when I started – not a lot of companies can say that!” Gerry Spence
Scott Raeburn, Workshop Quality Manager, and Gerry’s boss, added, “Gerry is a real asset to the team up in Glasgow. His understanding of our equipment is fantastic, and he has earned the respect of his team through his hard work and dedication to MEP Hire over his 23 years’ service.”
